Northeastern Students Seek Input on a Burlington Greenway Path

March 14, 2023

A team of graduate students from Northeastern University is conducting a capstone project in collaboration with the Town of Burlington’s Economic Development Office to explore the feasibility of two potential multi-use path projects in Burlington: a river walk along the Vine Brook and a bike path connecting separate parcels through the Mall Road commercial district.

The Northeastern team is conducting a survey seeking input on the location and type of path the community would use.  The survey can be found at Burlington Multi-Use Path Projects Survey

The study will explore how to enhance connectivity and walkability for the Mall Road area while incorporating site development standards to create active streetscapes and outdoor spaces that enhance the pedestrian and cyclist experience.  “Our goal is to find the most feasible solution for the town to increase pedestrian connections and walkable access within the mall district.  We recognize the challenge of creating an environment for positive changes while protecting natural resources, opening doors to private investment, and building a compatible and supportive relationship between new development and surrounding neighborhoods,” said Ran Tao, one of the students on the Northeastern team.

“The Northeastern Innovation Campus is one of our Town’s gems and this project gives us an opportunity to work in collaboration for the benefit of the community. Moreover, the graduate students bring a spotlight to pathway concepts that the Town has discussed but has not had the resources to explore in more depth. The students’ work will help provide us with new ideas, information, and steps toward meaningful implementation,” stated Melisa Tintocalis, the Town’s Economic Development Director.
