Are your children getting ready for spring break from school soon and you’re wondering how to keep them entertained and out of trouble? Burlington and the neighboring communities have tons of things to do and places to visit during this year’s April vacation.
The weather is warming up and it seems like we are all itching to get active and explore the world around us. Whether Mother Nature cooperates this early in the spring, let’s take a look at some family-friendly activities you may want to plan right in our own town of Burlington as well as in our neighboring towns such as Lexington and Concord.
Explore History in Lexington & Concord
Burlington is a mere 30 minutes from the historic sites of Lexington and Concord, made famous during the American Revolution when British soldiers marched on the two towns to capture Patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock as well as to destroy the mass of weapons and ammunitions said to be hidden there. The Redcoats, however, did not find the stores of weapons as the Patriots had received forwarning of the troops on the way. The battle was small but it marked the “shot heard around the world” and the start of the American Revolution.
As this momentous event occurred on April 19, 1775, this month the region comes alive with re-enactments, tours, and historical exploration of the battle that marked the beginning of the battle for independence.
Visitors to the region can explore Minute Man National Historic Park where you can explore the battlefields and structures associated with these battles. If you plan your visit around the Patriot’s Day weekend you may be able to see re-enactments, tours, and stories told by historians of what it was like on that day so many years ago.
While you are in the area be sure to visit the Concord Museum and the Lexington Common National Historic Site. Your children will love hearing about the famous historical figures they have only seen in their textbooks. Now they can see where the action happened and see for themselves what it might have been like in the late 1700s.
