March 4, 2025

The signs are everywhere: climate change is real and happening all around us. Last year was the hottest on record, and 2025 is expected to surpass that. Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, heatwaves, and wildfires are on the rise, and melting glaciers are impacting fragile ecosystems around the globe. As humans and businesses, we should reduce our carbon footprint, embrace clean energy, and decrease our use of natural resources.

One recently relocated business in our area, Vaisala, provides technology for monitoring climate change and accurately measuring and understanding environmental changes and patterns. It is located at 3 Van De Graaff Drive and is the focus of this month’s Burlington Business Spotlight.

Join us as we welcome Vaisala to the Burlington Business Community and learn how they have become known as a global tech pioneer in science-based innovations, especially in weather, environmental, and industrial measurements.

Vaisala

What Does Vaisala Do?

Founded in the 1930s as a small Finnish start-up known for improving the radiosonde (an instrument carried by a balloon that transmits weather data by radio), Vaisala now works with 150 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, and Japan, and even has products in space!

From humble beginnings, Vaisala made a name for itself through “science-based innovations known for reliability, quality, and precision.” Vaisala’s innovation, the HUMICAP® sensor, changed the game for measuring relative humidity and has evolved into the global standard widely used in various industries—and even on two planets.

Over the past 90 years, the company has expanded its workforce to 2,500 employees and extended its products to include environmental monitors to measure weather patterns, air quality monitors, high-quality sensors including the global standard HUMICAP, industrial applications for processes that measure factors like humidity, temperature, and pressure, and global applications to make lasting impacts on meteorology, renewable energy, and research to aid the climate crisis.

Currently, the Vaisala facility in Burlington is recognized as the largest humidity calibration facility in the Americas, making it a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence for climate action.

Vaisala Industries

Vaisala Weather and Environment products provide measurement solutions for applications in various fields such as meteorology, aviation, renewable energy, agriculture, and maritime. Their global team of innovators and solution-seekers strives to “Take every measure for the planet,” with the Earth’s future at stake.

Vaisala’s Industrial Measurements customers come from a wide range of industries, including pharmaceutical, biotechnical, and medical device manufacturers, as well as the power generation and transmission, automotive, semiconductor, data centers, battery manufacturing, electronics, and building automation industries, among others. Often, the goal in these industries is to save energy, resources, and ultimately lives, with accurate and reliable measurements.

VaisalaHow Burlington Plays A Role

The advanced facility required for the calibration center in Burlington was only one of the determining factors in choosing the Town as the newest location for Vaisala’s highly reliable and accurate equipment. Burlington was an ideal choice due to its location along the 128 technology corridor, making it a convenient commute for employees and a perfect location among other life science-focused organizations. The support, amenities and endless options offered in Burlington for families and individuals associated with Vaisala also made it an attractive location for relocation.

As Vaisala heads toward its 90th anniversary next year, we at the Bring Me to Burlington page wish them congratulations on their grand opening on March 4, 2025, at their Burlington facilities and much luck in the future.
